BIRD ISLAND
June 30, 2009 by Neville · Leave a Comment
Yesterday evening I popped up to the Lakes Beach to try and capture an image of Bird Island. This is just one I came back with, not quite what I have in mind but I’m getting closer to it, at least I know when I need to go back. This was captured on the D3 with an exposure of 4 minutes, a natural density 0.6 filter was in front of the 24-70mm 2.8 lens and, from it’s sharpness was bolted down really well on my Benbo tripod. The iso was 200.

NEW FOUND SKILLS
June 24, 2009 by Neville · Leave a Comment
For the last week I have been talking to a very well known art photographer in Switzerland who’s work I have followed for quite a while now and admired, about light. I asked him if he would critique one of my photos of Merrin I captured 6 months ago, I was not happy with it and couldn’t work out what was wrong, so he emailed some lighting set up sketches for me to study. After taking his advice this is the image I came up with and, I cannot stop looking at it, my light is now so much richer there is more depth, feeling, tone and I love the light on Merrin’s neck. I cannot wait to push this new skill further on my next portrait sitting and, I know who that’s going to be.

CHURCH

Last Sunday 21st June we had a fantastic day with a packed out encounterLIFE church, to listen to the Stone’s in the morning, always a pleasure and Dr David Sumrall in the evening. I had the privilege of shooting a few shots in the evening service. Here’s a few.

TERRIGAL

Sunday morning I decide to head out early to Terrigal with the idea of trying to capture something different of the Skillion, but as soon as I got there I realized the sunrise may be something special. There was a little gap in the horizon line. So it was a matter of finding something to hold the picture together and wait.
I was using the D700 this time on my trusty Benbo tripod, a 24-70mm lens had a 0.6 natural density filter in place to hold the detail in the sky, film speed was 100iso and the exposure was 3sec @ f22.
Incase you were thinking I used filters, well I didn’t, this was all natural light, I haven’t even used Photoshop.

TESTING NEW SOFTWARE
June 12, 2009 by Neville · Leave a Comment
I’m currently testing Nikons NX2 for my RAW processing and, my early attempts are incredible. Compared with Aperture, my normal software, the sharpness of my files are incredible. This image of Sydney I photographed last December looked OK when I first processed it but in NX it took only 2-3 minuets to get this lovely and sharp.

WHAT TO DO?

Just finished a photo from Loren’s shoot I done a couple of months back, but I don’t know which I like best, the summery looking one or the grainy natural shot. Anybody got any ideas? Drop me a line and let me know.

PRE-VISUALIZATION

This is what you can come home with if you pre-viusalize your photography. While lying in bed listening to the rain this morning, I thought there just maybe a chance a small gap might be on the horizon line. So grabbing my gear I headed down to the beach.
Six minute’s is all I had to capture this scene this morning down on my local Bateau Bay beach. I decided to use the north end of the beach as I knew it had a flat rock platform that if there was a gap in the horizon line between ocean and clouds the sun would bounce up underneath and create a bit of a light show. So having found a pleasing arrangements of small rock’s to lead your eye through the picture it was just a matter of waiting for the moment. I had the D3 with 24-70mm lens attached, plus a 0.9 natural density filter on my trusty Benbo tripod, exposure was 1.0sec at f18 film speed was 200 iso, calculated on my Minolta light meter.

COSMETICS & TROPHIES

Things might be a bit slow in the portraiture end but I’m still shooting small table top images. This week I have had to photograph more lipsticks and trophies, it’s a job I quite enjoy, as you can push things around and take your time in getting just the right light in the right place. It makes all the difference when the objects are so small.
